The Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT) in Nairobi, Kenya, is a Think Tank established under Strathmore Law School. CIPIT was launched in 2012, and scope of its work includes evidence-based research and training in intellectual property, information technology law, and policy, especially as they contribute to African law and human rights. CIPIT is participating as the sub-Sahara African partner in the CYRILLA collaborative.
CYRILLA which stands for the Cyber rights Research Initiative and Localized Legal Almanac, is a global initiative that seeks to map and analyse the evolution and impacts of legal frameworks in digital environments by aggregating, organizing, and visualizing distributed legal data through open research methodologies, data models, taxonomies, and databases. CIPIT has undertaken the project with the intention of improving Digital Rights Literacy by expanding access to verified, up-to-date policy data by civil society, private citizens and key government and private-sector allies through CYRILLA initiative. CYRILLA also has a technology partner Hurridocs involved in this collaborative.This project will advance the goal of promoting fundamental freedoms, human rights, and the free flow of information online. This will be achieved by supporting more consistent and formalized coordination among leading digital rights legislation and case documentation initiatives, amplifying awareness and maximizing impact of applied research and advocacy in defence of digital rights at local, regional, and global levels.
